This reflective session will help teachers understand how language shapes identity, belonging, and power. It will explore how small shifts in everyday classroom language can transform student experience, particularly for multilingual learners and those from marginalised groups.
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
• Explain what inclusive language is and why it matters in diverse classrooms
• Identify exclusionary or biased language patterns in everyday teaching
• Use inclusive alternatives that promote belonging and linguistic justice
• Apply strategies for inclusive communication with students and families
• Reflect on how their own linguistic habits shape classroom culture
Presenter
Dr Marshall is the Assistant Head of Discipline (Education, Childhood and SEND) at the University of Derby as well as the Chair of the Research Ethics Committee for the Institute of Education and Skills. She is a highly experienced senior lecturer in the field of comparative/international education and TESOL.
