This one day course equips teachers and school leaders of any curriculum with strategies drawn from research and cutting-edge practice for developing great readers. We look at what makes an excellent reader and delve into aspects of reading development, including metacognition for reading, growing high level inference skills and developing deep thinking through linking skills and the power of vocabulary. The course is designed to be a balance of theory and practical group interaction, enabling delegates to leave with hands-on experience of strategies to apply back in school. Please note that this course does not include phonics/decoding training.

Heather Russell
Heather has over twenty years’ teaching experience across the full primary age range, as a leading teacher for English, a senior leader and an acting head teacher. As an English adviser, she has developed an international reputation for high quality training and support. Accredited by Edge Hill University for advisory work, Heather also works with DfE regional English hubs, developing cutting edge practice in the delivery of primary English. Heather is passionate about reading and supporting schools in developing young readers and writers. She always has her nose in a book and is more than happy to recommend great reads to use in class.
Ruth Unsworth
Over her 15 year career in education, Ruth has taught across all primary key stages, specialising in English and leadership skills. Ruth spent 5 years working with National Strategies and North Yorkshire LA as an English consultant and has been actively involved in the development of curriculum at assessment at national level in the UK. Holding an MA in Educational Improvement, Development and Change, Ruth has led English in the UK state and independent sectors as well as in the international sector. Working with Durham University, Ruth is currently studying towards a PhD in knowledge acquisition and professional development, alongside her work as a senior leader at the British School in Tokyo. Ruth loves to help others to write poetry and stories and enjoys reading anything and everything.
